all quiet on the southern front

oh wait, that's a lie. because a teacher in oaxaca, mexico was recently hacked to death with ice picks for refusing to support a state-wide teachers' strike. just another great example of the left being tolerant, i guess.

Person A goes on a homicidal rampage.

    Person A is a liberal.

    Liberals are homicidal maniacs.

You're a smart guy Danner, and I have trouble believing you'd put any credence in that particular line of reasoning.

  2. well, since that line of reasoning does not even remotely resemble what i said, i don't. if all liberals were homicidal maniacs, i would have been hacked to death long ago. it just seems to me that liberals, who bill themselves as tolerant folk, are more likely to react violently to people disagreeing with them.

"...that line of reasoning does not even remotely resemble what i said..."

No, but it is a ridiculous generalization, just as the implication of your conclusion represented a ridiculous generalization. "just another great example of the left being tolerant, i guess." A more accurate statement might have been "just another great example of a complete psycho."

"...liberals, who bill themselves as tolerant folk, are more likely to react violently to people disagreeing with them."

For every instance you can find of a liberal reacting violently I can find a story of a conservative reacting in an equally violent fashion. Does this mean that it is typical of conservatives to react violently to those who disagree with them? No, not at all. It means that one person, whose views happened to lean to the right, went off the deep end.

There are people of every political or ideological preference who will react in a negative way to disagreement with their core values. And there are also people capable of feeling very strongly about an issue, but still being able to discuss it rationally with someone of opposing viewpoints. And beyond them there are people who can disagree, have an argument, and still not draw baseless conclusions about an entire political spectrum.

  4. Hmmm...maybe it's just me, but after reading that story, it sounds more like a couple of people making a political statement against someone who disagreed with them than like some random crazy who went off the deep end.

So if I go out and start laying waste to political groups I disagree with as a statement...does that make me or my actions any less crazy? The fact is that sane people do not chop other people up. Motivation is irrelevant.
